Gla - mycaean fortress

...at the bank of Kopais Lake ( the lake with no water in it - myceaneans dried it completely in order to gain more farming areas).It is thought that Gla served as the "bread basket" for the Mycenaean world Well, in fact there's not much left - a surrounding wall, rouins of so called agora ( that was not an agora) and so called palace ( that was not a palace). Much of the area within the walls is vacant, leading archaeologists believe it served as a refuge for farmers in the area of Lake Kopais in the event of attack. But I don't think so. The nearest settlement that could endanger the population of Orchomenos ( the nearest town) were Thebes, which had no interest in attacking Gla - they had enough agricultural areas on their own, and apparently had a little to do with their neighbours. Empty areas within the walls could be built-up with some shelters made of organic materials, thad hadn't been preserved in humid soil, or coul have been used as a market or storage place. Okay, enough of archeological bullshit
